The Latest Trends in CNC Machining

October 20, 2021

The custom machining industry is always evolving. At On Time Precision Components, we make it our mission to stay on top of the latest trends to provide our clients with the best products and services on the market. Check out three of the top CNC trends from 2021:

Trend ONE – Increased Axes

With a typical 3-axis machine, the bed is constricted to linear movement along two axes, while the spindle translates up-and-down along the third axis. Higher axis machining enables more detailed cuts and incorporates rotational movement. While 3-axis machining held the standard in our industry for many years, newer increased axis turning capabilities mean we can be more precise, offering a wider range of possibilities.

Trend TWO – Robotics

Machining and robotics have long been used hand-in-hand but over the past few years we have seen an increase in the use of collaborative robots, sometimes called “cobots”. These industrial robots work closely alongside the CNC team, programmed to work intuitively. This can help manufacturers adjust to increased demand or bridge a labour gap. Decked out with safety features like padded joints and force limiters, they are safe for people to work around without a cage or other enhanced precautions.

Trend THREE – Advances in CAD/CAM Software

Historically, CAD/CAM was prohibitively expensive and not widely used. In the past five to ten years, the software has become not only more affordable but now is much more user-friendly with a staggering increase in its accessibility and performance. Proper utilization almost always leads to increased efficiency and accuracy and creates a more streamlined workflow. With the power of computer output only increasing and the wide spread availability of cloud computing resources, we have seen a significant productivity boost in CNC machining across the board.

Understanding the latest CNC trends and implementing them where appropriate helps us provide the best end-product to our customers. We pride ourselves in combining the latest techniques, equipment, and trends with a well-trained and knowledgeable team to create the small components our clients need to have a big impact in their markets. Our comprehensive team runs a full line of precision CNC milling centres with 4 AXIS, 5 AXIS, and 7 AXIS turning capabilities, exceeding the industry standard.
